DJ Qbert

Tonight, it's all DJ Qbert.

Hour 1: Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik (A Preskool Break Mix)

"Q-bert’s classic scratch b-boy mix hailed as “the greatest mixtape ever”...This piece has brought back the essence of what true school hip hop is all about and reminded everyone about the importance of breaks and the foundation of what the art was built on. Listen to the way Q cuts it up in ’94 old school style a year before he even invented the crab scratch!! Just make sure you leave enough room to breakdance..." - Boomkat.com

Hour 1: Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik (A Preskool Break Mix)

"It sounds like the maddest funk 45 dj set ever (think Cut Chemist, Shadow, Numark, doing a set on Ritalin and Crank). This set is very similar to the sets that Qbert uses at b-boys battles, I can only imagine the hysteria." - Turntable Lab (www.turntablelab.com)

Nicecast Internet Stream

You can now listen to Hooked on 'Tronics with your favorite media player via this URL (http://12.217.252.222:8000/listen.m3u). Let me know if you need any help with playing this "m3u" file in your media player.

OK, when I say that you can listen to this show using this URL what I mean to say is that sometime in the *near* future I will have a regularly scheduled "2nd chance replay" of each Hooked on 'Tronics show. Some people may find this excessive and a waste of time, and you're probably right. Thanks for listening.

Look out for more excess in the not-so-near future: new website!

DJ Shadow a Sellout?

Upon the recent release of DJ Shadow's "The Outsider," I've heard some hating from various people. Hell, all you hipsters have to do is hit up Pitchfork to know that it ain't any good (5.8). OK, I truly I haven't listened to the album much, but I will agree that what I have heard is not at all the Shadow of yesteryear. A little more "mainstream" I guess some folks would say.

Well, whether or not Josh Davis is a sellout is for you to decide. I am only here to bring you what I know for sure is the good shit! So, here tonight I bring to y'all some old DJ Shadow, peppered throughout with other goodies, mixed by Diplo and Q-bert in the first hour and then by Shadow himself in hour number two. Check the tracklists (and be sure to comment on any mistakes and/or omissions):

Hour 1

Spank Rock: "Breezeblock Mix" (right-click to download)

Hour 2:

This Is SPANK ROCK!

In honor of the newly released, debut album "YoYoYo..." from Spank Rock, I will be playing "this is SPANK ROCK." (aka "Voila!") in its entirety this Friday, April 28th. You'll hear many tracks from "YoYoYo..." expertly mixed by Christopher Rockswell and XXXchange with everything from Suzanne Vega to Missy Elliott to Jimi Hendrix. I realize that about one-fourth of this mix has already been played on the show, but that really doesn't matter and I don't care if you want something else. You want to know why?

a) This is my show!
b) This is Spank Rock!
c) This is an application to get your own show!

The second hour is still up for grabs. Either leave a comment on this post or send an e-mail to kruitronics(at)gmail(dot)com with any suggestions.

The Philosophy of Time Travel

The man they call DJ Samlive will be showcasing his craftsmanship this saturday on 89.7 KRUI from 9 PM to 11 PM with his latest work: The Philosophy of Time Travel.

Donnie Darko + Samlive = Aural Pleasure

Back with more info soon.

KRUI Wants Your (Friend's) Mixes!

This is an invitation to all DJs, friends of DJs, and people aware of people called "DJs" to contact me regarding any mixing you think should be featured on Hooked on 'Tronics. I've been in contact with some artists I have featured on the show:

Buddy Peace
The Marcia Blaine School for Girls (Production Unit, The Village Orchestra, etc)
Panzah Zandahz
ZILLA
DJ Ayres
Cosmo Baker
and maybe more that I don't remember right now

Anyway, the point is that there are many quality mixes out there that are waiting to be found and aired for the masses (aka my mom plus a few random listeners). Let those people know that there is a radio show playing mixes by people ranging from the under-represented hermit "bedroom DJs" to the world-renowned, egomaniacal DJs. It's all about variety, and sometimes I either don't have time for endless discovery or I am just too lazy to sniff out the latest and updatest (unlike my man Sid and his Hip-Hop Amaza Show).

Here's the contact info:
e-mail: kruitronics@gmail.com
AIM, Yahoo instant messaging: KRUItronics
MSN instant messaging: kruitronics@gmail.com
KRUI phoneline (to call during the show): 319-335-8970

If you like some of the artists I have featured, let them know. Most of the links on this site have their contact info. Also, tell your friends about the show, because you know they'll love it.

This guy made my night and my entire semester

A very kind individual called in this evening during the show, just to express his opinion regarding the show:

"Dude, best show ever."

No shit. He was definitely feeling the "Brainfreeze" and "Raiding the 20th Century." Also, I apparently have been playing pretty much "everything [he] likes" for this whole semester. He did have a few suggestions, I believe some Mr. Dibbs and Madlib, so I'll be sure to get right on those. I wish I would have written them down.

Just one call like that really makes a guy's amateur college radio DJ "career" worth it. Much appreciation goes out to all the listeners. I assume you are a small group, but two ears are better than none.

Welcome, Tom & Jill

If you are not Tom and/or Jill Balmer, part of this won't make any sense, but read on anyway:

Thanks for visiting my "crazy techno shit" blog. That's how Betsy likes to refer to what I usually call "electronic music." Actually, the show now consists of purely DJ mixes, with only limited "crazy techno shit." Maybe you could think of something creative for the new show name. After scrolling down for awhile you'll most likely realize that there really isn't much to this here blog. Just listing which mixes I have played from for each show, sometimes including album art with links to various places on the "triple-dub" that have info on the mixes.

You can click on the picture to the right (it's of me) that says "MySpace" to check out that page. You can also click here to go directly to the MySpace blog. You can pause the music on the main MySpace page and watch the fun Aphex Twin video if you're in an appropriate setting (e.g. not at work). The video quality isn't that great, but it's still enjoyable (for some people). It'll surely make you want to watch "Come to Daddy" again.
Leave me a comment here if you'd like.
